Interview: One eskimO

One eskimO (side)A few days ago we introduced you to the lovely ambient sounds of One eskimO. Perfectly suited to this almost Arctic weather we’ve been experiencing, One eskimO sees an eskimo, penguin, giraffe and monkey work together (ala Gorillaz) to make some great music, all ambient and relaxing.

We sat down with One eskimO’s frontman, Kristian Leontiou, to get to know a bit more about the project and what lies in store for the future.

For those of our readers who are a bit slow off the mark, how would you describe your sound?

Ambient, electro-acoustic is the easiest way to describe it although we’re chuffed that people are finding it difficult to pigeon hole.

I love how you’ve taken a band and created such a strong graphical image for yourselves, and haven’t just done so as a “side project” of the music – the graphics / animations seem just as important as the music itself. How did you achieve this? Did you just provide Passion Pictures with the music and let them get on with it? Or was it an incredibly close working partnership?

The animation aspect was always a big part of the project, I wanted to create strong imagery that went with the music. When I wrote the songs I also wrote the story. Passion basically turned it all into a reality, I’ve been present throughout the whole process, Passion took my treatment and expanded on it, the end result is incredible and the attention to detail from the animators is second to none.

Would you say that One eskimO is a short term project for you, Kristian? Are we going to see the Penguin, Giraffe, Penguin and Eskimo evolve musical styles, or have you a whole new project thought out after this album?

Well I’m already working on songs for the new album how the animation will evolve from it I’m unsure of right now but musically it’s coming together very nicely.

Working with Rollo must have been pretty awesome. How did you guys meet? On paper, it seemed a pretty unlikely collaboration to me at first, considering the sound of your 2004 album. What was his effect on the album’s production?

He was basically based in the studio next to me when I was writing the One eskimO material, he heard one of the tracks ‘astronauts’ and knocked on the door and one thing led to another. The album was recorded live and I guess almost acoustically, Then Rollo and I added electronic sounds, layers and effects, basically utilizing what he does best.

Will you be coming out of your igloo to perform One eskimO material live?

I used to hate playing live. The worst thing for me was being on the tour bus. But this is such a great group, we can’t wait to bring it out there.

Finally, what sort of stuff have you been listening to recently? When you record do you just focus on your music, or immerse yourself in other people’s stuff?

There’s so much cool stuff out there at the moment regardless of scene or genre but If had to pick something that is hogging the stereo then I think it would have to be Four Tet and The Whitest Boy Alive. It’s good to be inspired by other people’s music but if I’m writing I just see what happens.

Pre-order single ‘Kandi’, here. It’s out on Monday 23rd February on Little Polar.
