The Horrors – Sea Within A Sea

Horrors (side)Southend rockers The Horrors are back this year with a follow up to 2007’s explosive ‘Strange House.’ Since then we’ve all come to expect the band to be guyliner garage pioneers, their stylish ‘too-cool-to-be-emo/goth’ look combined with energetic live shows may have fooled some into thinking they were all about the rave, they themselves proclaimd they ‘didn’t believe’ in calm live gigs, this information accumulated makes the shock that much bigger.

Earlier this week the band started a countdown on their website, and when it finally reached zero it was (as many expected) new material from their upcoming album ‘Primary Colours.’ Being an admirer of the band I headed over to grab hold of the free track but what I found was somewhat unbelievable. One minute in and Faris Badwan starts to sing, not scream, or narrate a short story (see ‘Strange House’) but sing.. His voice is like a high-pitched Ian Curtis-Billy Mackenzie lovechild and the band as a whole seem to have taken a page out of the Joy Division tabs book. The sound is dark and shocking, not something one has come to expect from the skinny-jean-clad haloween-punks.

Dismissing the lunacy of the change in direction, (lunacy as in ‘wow I didn’t see that coming’ as opposed to ‘wtf are these guys on**rolleyes**) , the track is solid. It weighs in at well over seven minutes but the progression is so brilliant that you don’t notice. It takes a while to get used to the idea that this really is The Horrors!! but once the initial hoo-ha has passed what remains is a solid track – one that makes the wait for the album all the more unbearable..
