Scott Matthews - Elsewhere coverScott Matthews is one of those names that has been on my “list of artists to check out” for ages, but I’ve never really found the time to check out. So guess whose new album lands on my doormat last week? Yes, Scott Matthews’ shiny new piece of art, “Elsewhere”.

The Wolverhampton based singer/songwriter has managed to create a strong 11 track album of carefully crafted tracks placed somewhere between a one man Turin Brakes and a slightly less folksy Seth Lakeman. Intricate, gentle and tinged with sadness, it’s one of the strongest singer/songwriter albums to be around at the moment. “12 Harps” is a gentle number, but I’d imagine live it really comes into its own, a proper hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck moment.

The downside? Well, as The Line of Best Fit commented, each of the tracks are distinctly unmemorable. It’s great music, strong and with its own unique sound. But you just don’t find yourself mumbling along lines of songs to yourself, or have one stand out track that could be used to . It’s (very) good, just rather unremarkable – I’ll be sticking with my Tom McRae and Joshua Radin thanks.

Scott Matthews’ Elsewhere is out on Monday 25th – preorder your copy now.
