In the Post #13: Los Albertos – Dish It Up

Los Albertos (cover)I doubt there’s a greater feeling then going into the complete unknown and coming out with a smile on your face, this is exactly what I got from Brighton based Ska outfit; Los Albertos‘ third full length release “Dish It Up”.

The record just oozes fun from start to finish with that irresistible Ska mix of punchy brass and confidently delivered, well thought out pacey vocals. A fairly basic rhythm section throughout and that ever familiar reggae tweaking of the guitar do enough to accompany the other instruments, whilst allowing them to do their full justice.

Ska has been around in a few different guises over time, but Los Albertos are much more reminiscent of the likes of The Beat, The Specials and, dare I mention them, Madness, who kick-started Ska as a mainstream genre in the late 70s and early 80s, rather than the American acts around at the start of the 90s such as Sublime and Goldfinger.

This album is fun; there is no doubt about it. It’s full of bounding energy throughout, but this isn’t energy which is reckless, it’s concentrated and focussed to add to the music as a whole rather than fray the edges of the finished product as can often be the case with “energetic” music.

Whilst this album is great fun, it’s also likely to be that it won’t got anywhere near the attention it truly deserves. It’s fair to say that in recent years Ska really hasn’t got any notable attention in the UK which is worthy of mention, which is a shame because Los Albertos prove once again that we can do the stuff very, very well indeed.
