In the Post #14: The New 1920

Steve first introduced Cardiff’s The New 1920 back in February. Since then, they’ve finished their maiden self titled EP, which I got in the post yesterday.

Having supported Lostprophets, Kids in Glass Houses and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly they’re well versed in the live circuit, and have built up quite a following. Now this EP builds upon this, with huge choruses, mass-songalong and punchy, upbeat verses that is everything We Are Scientists would be had they been bought up in the UK (and actually had a decent second album).

Recorded in garages and bedrooms across Cardiff last summer, every track has the sing-along qualities of Lost Prophets’ “Last Summer” or We Are Scientists’ “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt”. Personal highlight is the first track, “Come Around”, with its chorus of “come back around / don’t you run again / this is nothing without you don’t you see?”, though it’s a close run thing with the other tracks – they all have amazing qualities and are just, well, great.

With no fat to be trimmed, it may only be four tracks but it’s one of the strongest we’ve heard in a while. If they can maintain the pace and quality they have for this EP for an album they may well have one of the year’s biggest hits on their hands. Make sure you go get this EP when it’s released on 20th July.
