Bands to Watch #117: Chester French

I was musing amid the countless celebrity Twitters the other day when I happened to stumble upon pop diva Lady GaGa’s page. I was scrolling through her ‘tweets’, and this readers, is how I discovered Chester French, the band we’d like to introduce to you today.
Described by the Po-Po-Poker Face singer as “super talented modern 1960’s surf-pop/hip-hop”, I was unsurprisingly intrigued to hear more from Chester French – so off I went to hit their MySpace.
Turns out the band is made up of two Harvard Uni graduates, D.A Wallach and Maxwell Drummey. While the latter member may be better know for his two-week (or so..) marriage to Peaches Geldof, turns out his day-job involves playing in this fashionably cool indie-pop duo.
Chester French are signed to ‘Star Trak’, Pharrell Williams’ record label. Indeed, the N*E*R*D rapper is a further star to go round bigging up the pair. He’s described their sound as “kinda Beatle-esque, with hints of MoTown”. Alas, this mix seemed to work for Pharrell, prompting him to immediately sign them up back in the Spring of 2007.
Despite the obvious vintage influences penetrating through their music, Chester French have a refreshingly original sound going on. They’re diverse, experimental and generally pretty exciting – making great use of dead-catchy guitar riffs, trippy electro synths and kooky lyrics amid their super-cool music.
