In the Post #16: The Cribs – Cheat on Me

The Cribs - Cheat On Me (cover)Following on from 2007’s critically acclaimed ‘Men’s Needs , Women’s Needs, Whatever’, Wakefield band, The Cribs, return next month with their highly anticipated fourth album, ‘Ignore the Ignorant’. The band have certainly managed to fit in a fair bit over the past 2 years. They gained a few big award nominations, a personally offered Sex Pistol support slot, and, oh, even a forth new member in the glittering form of ex-Smiths’ guitarist, Johnny Marr. So, the band’s forthcoming album should certainly be an intriguing one, especially thanks to the addition of Mr. Marr to the former Jarman brother trio.

‘Cheat on Me’ is the first musical serving of ‘Ignore the Ignorant’. Summery indie riffs skilfully led by Marr slide all over the place, as Gary Jarman coats the song with his shiney vocals. The gritty repetitive chorus hook of “That’s another! Cheat on me! Cheat on me!” is inset within the mind upon first listen, and although said lyrics get a little annoying after a few times round, it’s still pretty addictive. Sadly, ‘Cheat on Me’ fails to possess that excitingly quirky, stand-out quality of ‘Men’s Needs’. The band appear to have grown up a little, and they’re undoubtedly sounding a bit more tame, but that ultimate Cribs quality remains. Alas, I can’t wait for the upcoming album..
