MP3 of the Day (and More!) #95: Noah and the Whale

I come bearing three tasty gifts of the aquatic music variety. Confused? Noah and the Whale, the London four-piece folk band that got everyone whistling last year with ‘Five Years Time’ is back this summer with a new album, ‘The First Days of Spring’. Recorded at Rak Studios in London and then mixed in Hoboken, New Jersey in America, Noah and the Whale’s album #2 sports some really gorgeous tunes.

As an appetizer, have a nibble on the new version of the album’s first single that you’ve probably heard on the radio airwaves, ‘Blue Skies’, remixed by Young Americans Challenging High Technology (Yacht) from Portland, Oregon. This version has more dance sensibility than singer/songwriter Charlie Fink of the Whale intended for the original, but it’s certainly a valid viewpoint and one that the band themselves welcomes, stating on their official Web site, “Noah and the Whale have long held the musical philosophy that a song is never settled”. Judge for yourself.

Now we’re moving on to the main course, and it’s a doozy. At the end of April of this year, Noah and the Whale worked with famed director Vincent Moon to record four songs from the new album in an impromptu style in a Brooklyn, New York loft. Take a bite out of this…

And for dessert, here’s truly a treat. If you haven’t checked out the Black Cab Sessions yet and you’re a serious musicaholic, you really should. The (usual) set-up: a musical act is put in the backseat of a London black cab and have one chance to play a song of theirs, unplugged, and commit it to video to be posted and saved for posterity on the Black Cabs Sessions Web site. Stripped bare of electronic studio wizardry, this is where real singers and musicians shine. In the video below, it’s Noah and the Whale’s turn, with vocalist/guitarist Charlie Fink and fiddler Tom ‘T-Bone’ Hobden of the band ensconced in the back of the black cab du jour at this year’s Big Chill festival.

‘The First Days of Spring’ will be released on 31 August in the UK by Mercury Records.
