In the Post #21: Killa Kela – Amplified!

Kila Kela (cover)Famed beat-boxer come musician (and, randomly, according to Wikipedia, ex of Patsy Kensit), Killa Kela releases his debut album, ‘Amplified!’ next month. Mixing hip hop, pop, electro, grime, rapcore heck even screamo, the record is a mighty musical bag which the brain takes a while to adjust to. However, once the mind does adapt to the, quite frankly, assaultive sound of the record, you do begin to hear through to Kela’s real talent.

Much of Amplified! is a ferocious musical attack on the ear. ‘Built Like an Amplifier’ is lead by gritty, yet intriguingly groovy synth hooks. The distorted vocals of the verse are in fact quite melodic in comparison to the overly-brash chorus. Meanwhile, the speeding drum machine and crazed synths of ‘All Killa No Filla’ leave the listener feeling a little dazed, however the repetition amid the chorus of “It’s all killa, no filla, I’m just filling you in!” is sunk deep come the end of the track.

‘Cards and Cheques’ reeks similar musical havoc, as raging vocals layer over the similarly angry synths. ‘Get A Rise’ continues the uncomfortable crunky distortion. Laden with enraged vocals repeating “You won’t get a rise out of me!”, this track features grindie band Hadouken – who noticeably share a similar sound to Killa Kela. Prodigy-esque synths proceed to bubble throughout, with ‘Get A Rise’ ultimately ending up sounding like an angry Sonic the Hedgehog soundtrack (yes, that is a compliment).

Amid the fuzzy drum and bass, Killa Kela skillfully infuses a poppier sound into his music. Track 7, the super catchy ‘Situation’ features heavy, ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’-esque percussion, yet suave, stylish vocals layer nicely over the top. Track four, ‘Everyday’, successfully crosses into the safer territory that is Calvin Harris-stylee electro, while ‘She’s Sweet’ retains an additive, thumping beat throughout, despite the poppier (but noticeably weak) vocals buttered above it.

To conclude, Amplified! is not an easy record to listen to. It’s in your face, it’s loud and it’s brash. But it also showcases talent, and nearly every track hits you with some sort of contagious dirty beat or groove. Killa Kela’s music is certainly not for everyone. While it wouldn’t surprise me if he get’s a plethora of neon-sprayed baseball cap-wearing indie kids as fans, if edgy, hardcore hip hop is your kinda thing, check this album out, since Kela does it, and he does it well.
