In the Post #26: Absent Elk

Absent Elk (side)I was first introduced to the summery pop of Absent Elk back at the start of the summer, and since then I’ve been waiting for their debut album, Caught in The Headlights.

Based in Shoreham on the Sussex coast, Anglo-Norwegian Absent Elk are Kjetil Morland (vocals, guitar), Ross Martin (guitar, keyboards), Mike Hillman (guitar), James Penhallow (bass), and Ric Wilson (drums). Together they’ve made a great debut album with some great tunes – just nothing instantly memorable, but perfectly accomplished nonetheless. They’ve got hints of the stadium pop of Coldplay, the huge U2 sound, the fun of the Hoosiers and the indie-pop sensibilities of the Kooks on different tracks of their 12 track collection.

“Where I’d Rather Be” features a hint of The Twang’s “Either Way” with it’s “arms in the air / hug a mate” sensibility, whilst “Comfort or Amuse” is a touching ballad – they’ve managed to cram in lots of different styles, all very accomplished, but none of the tracks particuarly stand out or make me think “OH! That‘s a single just sat there”.

Overall it’s not gonna set the world on fire with its innovation, but its definately a strong debut album that could be a good stepping stone to bigger things.

5/10

Buy this if you like:
Radio friendly pop driven by guitars. Coldplay, Kooks, Hoosiers, Alexandria Quartet etc.

Don’t buy this if you like:
Stuff that will make you think, if you like more left-field, artsy stuff, or just plain loudness.

“Caught in the Headlights” is available on 19th October. For some reason it doesn’t seem to be available on Amazon or iTunes just yet, but is available to pre-order from Play.com. Read our interview with them.
