Ingrid Michaelson Q&A

Ingrid Michaelson (side)Jess introduced Ingrid Michaelson a few weeks back, and we were fortunate enough to get a few questions answered from the lovely New Yorker…

To many of us in the UK you’re a rather unheard of name. What’s your favourite part of coming over here?
Ever since I was a child I have been quite the Anglophile…so anything remotely related to England has always intrigued me. I love feeling a connection to the past. In America, it’s a feeling that is hard to come by.

And your least favourite?
I never can quite get used to the time difference.

Your music seems to have appeared on just about every respectable US TV series. Was there a conscious effort to get your music on TV shows or has it just all happened by accident?
My mother told me that my songs belonged on Grey’s Anatomy before I even knew what that show was. I knew it would be beneficial to get my music heard by many. I started to work with a licensing company in 2007 and they almost immediately got my songs placed on shows. I never knew it would jump start my career though.

On the subject of songwriting – how does it start for you? Are all the songs personal stories?
Some are autobiographical, some are fictitious… I usually don’t have a plan of attack. I just start playing chords and words pop out.

Before going on stage, do you have any rituals?
My band and I have a strange ritual. It’s hard to explain. But we all connect and get each other excited.

Supporting so many great artists (Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews etc) must have been an amazing experience. Who was your favourite one to tour with?
Jason Mraz and his band were so kind and fun.

Any amusing tales?
He pranked me once by snapping a polaroid of me when I had just woken up (at 2pm) and then made posters with the word “missing” over my picture. He was teasing me because I always slept so late that it was as if I was gone.

What would be a cool location you’d like to do a gig at?
On a boat in the middle of the ocean.

Where would you like to be in 5 years time?
Writing music for other artists, still writing and performing my own music, raising a family perhaps…or at least 4-7 dogs.

Finally, what music, books and TV are you really enjoying at the moment?
Madmen is my show of the moment. ‘Thanks for coming’ is the book in front of me. Bon Iver still thrills me musically.

Ingrid plays Manchester’s Night and Day Cafe this Saturday, 21st November, Birmingham’s Academy 3 on Sunday and London’s Scala on Monday 23rd November.
