Bands to Watch #148: Bo Bruce

Bo Bruce (side)Bo Bruce is a name a few of you might remember from earlier in the year when she was one of the stand-out characters on Orange UnsignedAct. Her emotionally exposed songs are fragile, haunting, and yet she has a power in her voice and honesty that is far beyond her 22 years.

We’ve had a year of strong female talent, with La Roux, Florence and her ruddy Machine and Little Boots all enjoying sizeable success. However, their songs all have a shiny plastic sheen to them – Bo Bruce does honesty and stark beauty in that knock-the-wind-out-of-your-lungs sort of way. At times she sounds like Dolores O’Riordan (from The Cranberries) or Imogen Heap with the trembling, breathless, fragile but surprisingly strong voice, and this is what we so love.

She’s certainly not got to where she is without working for it – oh no, she’s not one of those talentless X Factor winners who gets everything handed to them on a plate, or family members bankrolling her. She’s had a difficult 23 years, resulting in a short stint in and out of treatment centers and psychiatric hospitals, however this has proved to be a huge influence on her music – “I’m grateful to be one of the few people that came out of those holes – finding some kind of peace is something I now realise has to be worked on every day.” she says in her biography.

As well as doing quite great cover versions (she did a spot-on cover of The Verve’s Sonnet on Orange UnsignedAct), her own songs have that spine-tingling quality that few achieve – just watch Fighting Arizona below and you’ll see what we mean…

Right. You get the picture now, don’t you? Amazing singer/songwriter. Deserves huge things in 2010.
