Interview: Daisy Dares You

2010’s already shaping up to be a pretty amazing year for Daisy Coburn, otherwise known as Daisy Dares You. She’s just been longlisted for the BBC Sound of 2010 poll, and has her album coming out as well as a tour with Chipmunk, amongst other fantastic goings-on. Think La Roux sassy and Lily Allen fun and you’re halfway towards Daisy’s sound. Over the weekend we sat down to get her take on things…

Hello Daisy. What are you up to today?

Hello. I’m doing a photoshoot with this great photographer Robert Erdmann. He’s shot Beyonce and all these amazing people so I’m dolled up and very excited!

It’s that time of the year when everyone looks back at the year that’s been and the year that’s coming up. What has been your highlight of 2009? What about your lowlight? Likewise, what are you most excited about for 2010?

My highlight was probably getting signed. It all happened so quickly that it was a bit of a blur but really exciting. Lowlight was rushing around everywhere since it gets pretty tiring. In 2010, im just really excited about releasing my album and getting started.

What music / artists are you really excited to be hearing in 2010? What sort of stuff are you enjoying listening to at the moment?

I like Marina and the Diamonds and the Drums for new stuff. But im really excited about the new Courtney Love / Hole record.

How do you like to describe your music? I’ve been reading so many descriptions of your music and comparisons (from Avril Lavigne to Alex Roots and Britney Spears) I’d love to know what you think your music sounds like / who you’d compare your sound to.

I hate all the comparisons so much, although I know that’s just how it works. I cant bear being compared to pixie lott, just because we’re blonde. But I guess I have this year to prove people how different we are.

I know you’ve only done a few gigs so far, but what’s been your favourite? Before you go on stage do you have any weird and wonderful rituals?

I played the Twilight launch, which was great because it was the first time I had such a big sound system. But I quite like the smaller gigs and just enjoying myself on stage. Being on stage is the most important thing to me and what I enjoy most out of everything. I don’t have any particular rituals though.

What would be a cool location you’d like to do a gig at?

Hmm. Would be nice to do one in the field behind my house where we filmed the video for Number One Enemy.

Finally, what TV, films and books are you really enjoying at the moment?

Im reading a Morrissey biography and also a book about haunted houses. Im really interested in ghosts and stuff like that.
