Album Review: We Are Standard

If you happen to be one of those music lovers who are just as curious as to where a band hails from to what they actually sound like, then you will want to push that pin into the Basque Region of Spain. That’s where the electro-post punk band We Are Standard are known to reside.

The group recently put the final touches on their self-titled second album, a follow-up from their 2007 debut, “3.000V-40.000W, and it seems the most noteworthy fast fact is that Andy Gill (yes, that Gang of Four Andy Gill) came into produce the nine-track sophomore LP.

So with that, you’d expect some pretty groovy dance beats wrangled in with drop dead hooks and hot disco beats, right? Well, you do kind of get that with album, although to say it’s worthy of spins on international dance floors would be quite the stretch.

However, with songs that hold such cleaver title such “The First Girl Who Got A Kiss Without Asking” and “Other Lips. Other Kisses”, we only hear a heavy saturation of pro tools at work and a band trying too hard to be like the extraordinary dance floor heroes of yesterday, Gang of Hero. So more or less we’re left with something more ordinary than rather amazing.

Still, I’ve got to give some lyrical credit on the semi-social commentary song, “Don’t Let The Children Play Around” where we hear undertones (“Don’t say this/Don’t think like that”) that opportunities are seemingly fewer, no thanks in large part to those creeps who have helped make the world go bonkers.

One glaring criticism that I find with this album is that pretty much all nine of the tracks sound the same. Granted, sometimes it’s a subtle similarity, but it’s still there (examples: “Don’t Give Up and “The Last Time”). Overall, We Are Standard is enjoyable to listen to if you’re not really paying that much attention to it. Let’s say if you’re having a house party or springtime cookout, play this album for good background music. But as far as having something to show for global dance floor success, I’m afraid We Are Standard just doesn’t cut the mustard, not yet anyway.
