Video of the Moment #255: Hanson

Think back 13 years to the Spring of 1997, when a band of 3 brothers, aged 11, 14 and 16, stormed the charts with their infectious debut single, ‘Mmmbop.’ How much has your life changed since then? How different are you now from when you were that age? Well, Hanson has changed, too. While the majority of the music world has chosen only to view Hanson as “that band that looked like girls” or “that Mmmbop band,” loyal Hanson fans have been in for a real treat. Since their debut album, ‘Middle of Nowhere,’ was released in May of ’97, the band has released a Christmas album, 2 live albums, 3 EPs and 3 studio albums, and their sound has evolved into something quite different from what you probably remember.
While they’ll always be somewhere on the pop/rock spectrum, ever since they split with Island/Def Jam in 2001 over a lack of creative freedom and formed their own label, 3cG Records, their sound has veered much further towards rock. (Have a listen to 2004’s ‘Lost Without Each Other’, 2007’s ‘Great Divide’, and their 2005 live cover of Radiohead‘s ‘Optimistic’.) But with ‘Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’,’ the first single from their upcoming 4th studio album, ‘Shout it Out,’ they’re taking it back to their roots. As Isaac Hanson says in his latest blog entry, “When we first started playing music together in the early 90’s there were two seminal things that inspired us to make music: Time Life-1958 [and] The Blues Brothers.” So in anticipation of the album’s release in June and their sold out 5-night residency at New York’s Gramercy Theater later this month, they’ve released a new video for ‘Thinking ‘Bout Somethin” that is an homage to the ‘Shake A Tail Feather’ dance sequence in Blues Brothers. Directed by Todd Edwards of Blue Yonder Films and starring professional dancers, local residents and fans alike, they shut down Greenwood Avenue in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma to film this joyous, Summer-y video.
