First things first: never believe that Wikipedia holds the gospel truth, especially when digging around for fast facts about a band. Case in point, I wanted some bits and bobs about French electro-rock band, Pony Pony Run Run, only to come up with the limited dribble. It’s a good thing that synth player Antonin answered these questions and set the record. So, here it is, straight from the horses, err, make that pony’s mouth: the lowdown of a fascinating band to pay attention to.

Pony Pony Run Run have been around for awhile (2003), but I believe your debut, “You Need Pony Pony Run Run” album came out this past July in France. What was it like to finally be able to release an album after years of seemingly hard work? The first single, “Hey You” did very well in both France and Belgium. What was it like to see the song climb up the chart s and do so well?

We began playing together in 2005!

Wikipedia is wrong! Shame on wikipedia!

But nevermind…We formed the band and we quickly did shows in france, but mostly abroad ( Italy, Germany, Holland, Poland, Spain, Switzerland…).We took our time, with our staff getting bigger throughout the years, and, then, when we got sick of touring without anything to sell, we got in touch with our label, and, well here we are…

The enormous success of “Hey You” was a big surprise! That’s the last song we wrote , it’s a little bit different from the rest of the album, slower, cooler…It’s always a pleasure to play it live and hear everyone screaming, and singing, and clapping!

For those of us who don’t know much about the band, could you give us some background of how the band formed?

Gaetan (voice/guitar) and Amael (bass) are brothers, they had many bands together in the past..I met them in NANTES, we were at the same art school, Gaetan asked me to play keyboard although I’d never played it before! We were all guitarists ! All of us had to learn an instrument in the band, it was fresh and exciting!

I read that Weezer has played a great influence on the band. Is this true? What other bands and music genres in general have influenced you?

At the really beginning, the major common influence was bands such as Weezer, The Rentals, that dog and so on..I also remember we listened a lot to Cut Copy’s album,…Then we added all we were listening to: dance music from the nineties, zouk music, elevator music…But as we’re listening to all kind of music it’s getting hard to just say few names

Is it true you guys used to wear enormous sunglasses like the band Devo when you played live on stage? Do you still wear them today?

Only Gaetan wears sunglasses on stage, even in the everyday life, I think he can’t quit it, nobody ever saw his eyes!

What’s currently going on with the band? Do you have an album in the works? Will you be playing in some festivals this summer?

We’re mostly working on the live show, perfecting it, changing it, as we’ve been touring for nine months now, we try to refresh it, do new things, new parts, new lights..We didn’t have much time to write new songs, only pieces here and there…And yeah! we’ll be touring European festivals this summer, and really looking forward to it!

Finally, what are the band’s plans for the next year? Will you be touring? If so, do you know where yet?

Writing, writing, writing for the next album, and maybe, who knows? We’ll come again to your beautiful country.
