Video of the Moment #265: Janelle Monáe

When a music mogul like Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs calls an artist ‘a true visionary… one of the most important signings of my career,’ you have to wonder if they’re serious, or if they are just saying it for publicity. But when it comes to funky singer Janelle Monáe, I think Diddy may be on to something.

Featuring Outkast’s Big Boi and a fantastic horn section, ‘Tightrope’ is the first single off of Monáe’s debut LP ‘The ArchAndroid.’  In her soulful and powerful voice, she sings about how ‘as an artist it’s very important to always keep my balance and not get too high or too low about things. Even when I’m getting lots of positive reinforcement, to remain calm and enjoy the journey.’ The video, set in an insane asylum, is visually stunning, and features some incredible moves by Janelle and her supporting dancers. Put on your dancing shoes and check it out below!

Janelle Monáe is currently on tour in America with Erykah Badu. ‘The ArchAndroid’ is available now.
