Bands to Watch #187: Delorean

I paid no mind when Spanish act Delorean came to DC in March as support for Miike Snow. I wrongly assumed that the band had something to do with sci-fi, being the type of car fashioned into a time travel machine in the ‘Back to the Future’ films. Also, having seen Miike Snow last year, I skipped the gig. Now I could kick myself.

Delorean the band was indeed named after the extraordinary contraption built by Doc Brown in those Michael J. Fox movies (haha). The alt / dance band has been around since 2000, pretty long in music industry terms, and their release this year, ‘Subiza’, is the Basque quartet’s third album. Their famous fans include actor/sometimes DJ Mathew Horne, who was a recent guest on Steve Lamacq’s Roundtable and gushed over the band’s sonic aesthetics, and bassist Kev Baird of Two Door Cinema Club, who just days ago told all his Twitter followers to get the album, and quick. Pretty good endorsements.

Think Friendly Fires, Yeasayer, or even the Ruby Suns, just trippier, and maybe Chemical Brothers, but more accessible to the masses. Their song ‘Real Love’ has been remixed by famed Swedish techno artist the Field – now that’s some serious dance scene cred.
