Bands to Watch #191: Tubelord

Words by Luke Morton
Having read a review of their debut LP ‘Our First American Friends’ last year and upon hearing that they’re playing in Lincoln next month, I thought it was time to check out London’s indie math rockers Tubelord. This is not a move I regret.
The happy singalong pop feel mixed with the minimalist synthesised indie noise is something that isn’t going to grow old quickly. Sounding fresh each time I press play, Tubelord will undoubtedly be one of the biggest things on the UK music scene.
Signing with Hassle Records in 2009 (whose roster includes such fantastic artists as Cancer Bats, Alkaline Trio and Trash Talk), they’re destined for more fame. With a long string of UK dates stretching from now until early October (see dates at the end of this post), get down and see these guys before ticket prices skyrocket and the hipster kids get wind of this band.
Tracks such as ‘Stacey’s Left Arm’ and ‘Ratchet’ will stick with you all day and are filled with such joy and passion you can’t help but be impressed. However, there’s also the experimental side to the music: it’s not just three chords and a synth, their sound is anything but generic. Strange time signatures coupled with a raw and imaginative sound leaves a lasting impression, but it’s the catchy lyrics that prove Tubelord are more than just another underground British band. Watch the video for their song ‘Propeller’ below.
