Single Review: Fyfe Dangerfield – Barricades

By on Friday, 6th August 2010 at 12:00 pm

Guillemots frontman sometimes-gone-solo Fyfe Dangerfield is soon to release the piano ballad ‘Barricades’ as the second single off his album ‘Fly Yellow Moon.’ Since the first single, ‘She Needs Me,’  was released earlier this year, Fyfe has become fairly well known for his cover of Billy Joel’s  ‘She’s Always A Woman’ for a John Lewis TV advert.

Both that song and ‘Barricades’ have a much lower “quirk factor” than Fyfe’s work with the Guillemots, or even the rest of his solo album. So while it may seem a strange to choose a single thats not indicative of the album as a whole, it only makes sense when you consider how well his LAST piano ballad went over (over 315,000 views of the official video on YouTube). As a fan of the off-kilter and bizarre, I’ll always be a fan of his musical inventiveness. But underneath all the quirks, Fyfe Dangerfield is an incredibly talented musician with a gift for heartfelt, gorgeous lyrics, and if it takes a song with fewer bells and whistles for  people to see that, well then I can deal with that.

Check out the simple and stunning black and white video for ‘Barricades’ below. The double A side single ‘Barricades’/ ‘She Needs Me’ will be released 6th of September.
