Single Review: Dog is Dead – Young

Nottingham five-piece Dog is Dead are releasing their second single, ‘Young,’ today. It’s the follow-up to their debut single, ‘The Glockenspiel Song,’ which was released in June. They’ve described their sound as “an original blend of harmonious, indie-pop in the disco, with a cheeky jazz hint” and “uplifting pop for jazz junkies and choir folk,” and these are quite possibly the perfect descriptions.

‘Young’ is so indie it hurts, and I mean that in the best way possible: in it, Dog is Dead takes some of the defining characteristics of everyone’s favorite indie bands and combines them into something really joyous and special and all their own. It begins with electronic bleeps and chirps that wouldn’t be out of place in Passion Pit‘s arsenal. Its fast-paced rhythms are somewhere between the ‘mathletics’ of Foals and the Afrobeats of Vampire Weekend. And the chorus of “hold your breath and count to ten / we’re losing touch and losing friends / but we’re young” is lovely, with gorgeous, soaring harmonies reminiscent of Fleet Foxes or Mumford and Sons. This, if you weren’t sure, would be the bit that appeals to ‘choir folk.’ And the ‘jazz junkies’ (the Mighty Boosh fan in me is conjuring up images of Howard Moon) will love the saxophone. On top of it all, there’s a sing-along quality to the melody that would make it fantastic live.

‘Young’ is a spectacular song, and having already opened for bands like One Night Only and Ok Go, and played at Dot to Dot Festival and Glastonbury, they’re surely headed for great things. I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Check out the official video for ‘Young’ below, as well as a Burberry acoustic session below the cut.

Dog is Dead are playing a series of gigs in England this September and October. See our ticket alert for more information. TGTF is also lucky enough to be able to offer you two mp3s from the band:
