Bands to Watch #197: Delta Maid

Liverpool lass and singer/songwriter Delta Maid is someone to keep on your musical radar. Despite being only 25 years old, she sings with the determination of the American country and blues artists that she was reared on via her parents’ record collection. Country generally isn’t my thing but I hear something special in this Liverpudlian’s delivery that warrants further attention.

It was really interesting to learn that like myself, Delta has a degree in biology and had plans on becoming a scientist before plans changed. In Delta’s case, she decided to become a songwriter, even at one point writing with Ed Harcourt. She released a debut EP, ‘Broken Branches’, this summer, but her real dream is to write an entire album entirely by herself and entirely within her own terms. When I watched the below video, a live performance of the title track ‘Broken Branches’, I had to remind myself that this young woman is from Liverpool and not from Dixie.

Also, thinking about Liverpool’s most famous sons the Beatles wasn’t such a far stretch in relating to her, because in the Fabs’ early days, they sang covers of r&b classics and country tunes. I still think it’s pretty cool to see that someone has drawn great inspiration from musical traditions thousands of miles away and separated by an ocean. It just goes to show that music has no boundaries and really, talent can sprout up anywhere and surprise you.

Delta, you are excellent…gritty…soild control of pitch in your voice, and you sing the song (the story) not just utter the words (lots of singers confuse this) you grab the listener. I like what you do on guitar, and look forward to hearing more of your style as you progress in your career. Keep writing. There’s the thing that makes for musical and personal growth. I love country blues..if you need a mentor online, let me know. I’ve been in this for 35 years, all over the map. Get your sleep too, okay?
