Single Review: Matt Costa – Witchcraft

Californian singer-songwriter Matt Costa recently released ‘Witchcraft,’ the first single off his upcoming album, ‘Mobile Chateau,’ due out on 4th October 2010. This album is the follow-up to his 2006 debut, ‘Songs We Sing,’ and 2008’s ‘Unfamiliar Faces,’ and is the first that Costa produced himself. And that’s not the only new thing about this song and album: Costa has recruited a completely new band to back him up: The Mothers Sons are a Southern California collective made up of Robb Rowe (guitar/bass), Kenny Bender (guitar/bass), Danny Garcia (guitar/bass) and Jona Wilder (drums).

With ‘Witchcraft,’ 28-year-old Costa has created a song that sounds more at home in the 1960s than in 2010. And as somebody who listened to almost nothing but music from the 60s in my formative years, I love it. The guitar riffs could’ve been taken directly from the Beatles’ back catalog, and there’s a tone to the vocals that is just deliciously retro, not to mention the harmony the chorus: “I can’t explain / she must be using witchcraft.”

This 1960s influence on the song is not only prominent, it’s deliberate. Costa says “I’ve always been drawn to that sound. I’ve been hearing songs like these in my head for my whole life, and ‘Mobile Chateau’ is the closest I’ve gotten to getting those songs out of my head and onto a record.” But whats really great about ‘Witchcraft’ is that it doesn’t only sound retro, it sounds authentic. This is most likely due to the way it was recorded. Costa explains, “I wanted to take a much more raw approach to recording. I wanted to add a haziness to the songs, so you couldn’t tell if it was recorded in a giant church or in a tin can. This leaves room for the listener to imagine them however they want.” So I urge you to put on ‘Witchcraft’ and imagine you’re back in the 60s. It wont be hard to do!

His new album is the best. I saw that he is playing a free Jack Daniel’s show in Jacksonville, FL on Dec. 2. Signed up for tickets at – might try to drive down to see him. Otherwise, hopefully he’ll do more free shows in my area soon.
