10 for 2011: #2 – Birdeatsbaby

Last month, we asked you to vote for the top 10 artists you thought would be big in 2011. The runner-up in this year’s poll for bands to watch in the new year is from the seaside town of Brighton with a name that will definitely get your attention…

Bird Eats Baby describe themselves as “alt-classical-prog-punks from Brighton”. Sounds pretty one-of-a-kind. As for their sound, they remind me of Dresden Dolls if they were descended from East European gypsies (I don’t really have another act in my mind that sound anything remotely like Bird Eats Baby). Or possibly Katzenjammer? They have some pretty dark, gothic-sounding song titles: how does ‘I Always Hang Myself with the Same Rope’ impress you? And to be fair, let’s go back to their band name. It’s well documented that band names can affect a band’s trajectory, and Bird Eats Baby? That leaves a pretty indelible image in your brain, which is probably what they were trying for anyway: a reaction.

Judging from the photos on their official Web site and MySpace, they are great lovers of the military, from militaristic garb to militaristic imagery in their song lyrics. There are nods to chamber and classical music in what they do, two genres that are not adequately explored or given the appreciation they deserve in music today. Have a watch/listen to their video for ‘The Trouble’ below.
