Album Review: Appomattox – Appomattox EP

Appomattox, a rock trio originally from Boston but now based in New York City, put out a new, eponymously-titled EP a little while back, and this is the follow-up release to their debut album, ‘A O’, released in 2008 on Triple Down Records (procurable now via Bandcamp). I already know they’re great live, having seen them support the Lemonheads 2 years ago and play a gig in DC that autumn. Let’s have a look at this EP track by track, shall we?

There are five songs in all on ‘Appomattox’, and they’re all barely over the 2-minute mark, so they’re tailor made for radio plays. (Hint to the BBC and other purveyors of fine music on the airwaves in Britain.) ‘Rendition of You’ stars a great guitar intro line that other bands would be jealous of, and the song has a confident swagger. “Let’s pretend we had a good idea”? No pretending, this is a good start. No, make that an excellent start. Watch the band perform the song below, at a ‘secret’ EP release party in Brooklyn last October.

The second track, ‘Equal Time’, is faster paced and more of what I expect after loving ‘A O’ the first time I heard it. ‘Olympia Snowe’ is brooding, darker, and an interesting contrast to ‘Equal Time’. ‘Speculators’, sounding decidedly more angular, also recalls ‘A O’, but not aggressive (and by the way, that’s not a dig, I consider the restraint favouring the sound, not detracting from it). “Where did the money come from?” A reasonable question, given these difficult economic times. The last track, ‘Typical’, is the weakest track. Lead singer Nick Gaynier’s vocals in the chorus sound at odds with the instrumentation. Do I like this EP? Yes. Do I love tracks on it? Yes. Do I love it as a whole? Didn’t immediately but I think it’s a grower.

‘Appomattox’ is available now from iTunes and other music retailers.
