Bands to Watch #202: Jazz Morley

In this era of the Sara Bareilleses and Norah Joneses, I can be very picky about women behind pianos who sing, so when one comes along that I actually enjoy, I want to tell the world about her. Enter Dorset singer/songwriter Jazz Morley. You know how sometimes you’ll be listening to a song, and there’s something off, like you can tell it’s pretentious, contrived or both? There’s certainly none of that here with Morley’s music. She may only be 21, but she’s got a beautiful voice with an amazing range that belies her years.

Her song ‘Disconnected’ is a regretful, heartbreaking study into missing a loved one (and who hasn’t been in that boat?); ‘Miss Behave’ is a more soulful effort that would appeal to the Corinne Bailey Rae fans out there. Interesting juxtaposition, that – it definitely makes me wanting to hear more from this woman. The BBC are also fans: Morley has been invited to participate in a BBC Introducing Musicians’ Masterclass in February. Getting invites to this ‘class’ are extremely limited and are only given to the brightest under the radar acts the BBC deserve the opportunity to learn from the best DJs, big name artists, heads of labels, agents and managers.

Not content to hole up and do her own thing exclusively, Morley is also a songwriting collaborator, having worked with Polly Scattergood (who I’m sure you remember from the single ‘Please Don’t Touch’) and Portsmouth-based artist Becky Jerams. What’s up next for Jazz Morley? While she will no doubt gain more fans and more exposure across the UK during a 23-date tour across the country, she is committed to giving back to the community, making appearances at schools to talk about her career so far and her training at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford. Sounds like the talented Morley has a solid head on her shoulders.
