Single Review: Van Susans – Bones

Van Susans from Bromley, London, have a very unusual name. (Remind me to ask them about it if I ever have the pleasure of running into them.) But who cares about the band’s name if the music they make is brilliant, right? The band just started up in mid-2010, but check out their debut single, ‘Bones’, released late last year. In the haze of Coldplay and Keane‘s popularity, I always wondered how a band with a prominent piano would be perceived. Well, if Van Susans are any indication, there is plenty of ground piano bands can cover without aping either of those venerated stadium rock bands.
I like this song. A lot. Frontman Olly Andrew sings, “healing takes longer sometimes / sometimes you have to let go, go, go.” And “Sometimes it takes a long, hard fall / to find out maybe you’re not so invincible after all.” Good lyrics. Only wish I’d written it! A second single, ‘Plans’, is scheduled to be released on 21 February. The band recently added a sixth member, a full-time violinist, and are currently working on a debut EP. Definitely interested to see what happens with this band.

[…] From just five songs, I could tell this band of six just “had” it. Initially, it was single ‘Bones’ that caught my ear first, with its lyrics of a young man’s bombast and invincibility , later […]
