The BRIT Awards 2011 – The Nominees

By on Friday, 14th January 2011 at 11:00 am

James Corden (sans Mathew Horne, it appears) will be hosting the the BRIT Awards on the 15th of February at London’s O2 Arena, the first time the event will be held there. Last year, the performance that had everyone talking was Cheryl Cole’s; this year, live performances by Take That, Plan B, Tinie Tempah and Rihanna are already planned, with other names sure to follow. The nominees for the 2011 BRITs were announced last night and while there were the predictable nominees, there were some interesting choices as well.

Mumford and Sons, a band we haven’t talked about on TGTF in a while, is nominated for several gongs. Also nominated for several awards is Tinie Tempah, one of the artists on MTV’s longlist of artists to watch in 2010; he’s a nominee in the category for Best Male Solo Artist alongside relative newcomers Mark Ronson and Plan B and legends Paul Weller and Robert Plant. In the female equivalent category, the aforementioned Cheryl Cole will be duking it out with BBC Sound of 2010 nominee Ellie Goulding, Laura Marling (pictured right), Paloma Faith and Rumer.

The nominees for Best Breakthrough Act are all acts you’ve heard of: Ellie Goulding, Mumford and Sons, Rumer, Tinie Tempah and the xx. Similarly, the Best British Group nominees are all famous names; Biffy Clyro, Gorillaz, Mumford and Sons, Take That and the xx will battle out that one.

One of the most interesting categories for the night will be who wins Best British Album. Mumford and Sons’ ‘Sigh No More’ will be pitted against Plan B’s ‘The Defamation of Strickland Banks’, Take That’s ‘Progress’, Tinie Tempah’s ‘Disc-Overy’ and the xx’s ‘xx’. The complete list of nominees for this year’s BRIT Awards are after the jump.

You can catch a repeat of the nomination ceremony tonight, Friday 14th January at 8 PM on ITV2. The BRIT Awards 2011 will be screened live on Tuesday 15th February on ITV.

Full list of nominees after the jump.
