Single Review: The Go! Team – Apollo Throwdown

Following ‘T.O.R.N.A.D.O’ and ‘Buy Nothing Day’, ‘Apollo Throwdown’ is the third single taken from The Go! Team’s most recent album, ‘Rolling Blackouts’. The vocals on this song reminds me of Uffie, but without an awful amount of vocal modification, Ninja’s vocals sound much more natural and pleasant. The “rockets to the left of me / bullets to the right of me / flames to the back of me / spark the TNT” part is so fun to sing along to and I always visualise cheerleaders dancing and chanting to this song. The bass is very jumpy and gives the song a lot of depth. Playing with bright colours and 80s’ editing effects, the video for ‘Apollo Throwdown’ is extremely retro. It wouldn’t be hard to deceive someone by claiming that this song is from the ’80s.

There’s also a remix of ‘Apollo Throwdown’ by Star Slinger. Being a fan of Star Slinger’s remixes, this does not disappoint. With the heavy beats made softer, the whole song sounds much more chilled. It’s the kind of music that I listen to while I go shopping: it’s relaxing yet lively, the kind of music that brightens my day.

The ‘Apollo Throwdown’ single is available now via Memphis Industries.
