Bands to Watch #212: YAAKS

So a little birdie told me that YAAKS from Eastbourne was a band I should definitely put on my list to check out. It appears that like the Vaccines before them, they’ve decided to keep everything about themselves closely guarded and therefore mysterious. Paul Lester of the Guardian championed last month as a New Band of the Day so I guess we’re not too far behind. Lester’s article insists, “File next to: Friendly Fires, Foals, Delphic, New Order.” Umm, yes please.
I can see the Foals’ resemblance in the bouncy ‘HRHRHYTHM’. The first time I looked at that song title, I thought it was a complete rubbish title. Now after all the Royal Wedding events of last week, I’m looking at maybe it reading like “Her Royal Highness Rhythm”? Whatever it stands for, it’s an infectious, wickedly good dance track. Just based on this one song, you have to imagine they must be amazing live. You can listen to ‘HRHRHYTHM’ below and download it from the band’s Facebook page. ‘Cavalcade’, with what sounds like synthesised cowbell, has more of a Friendly Fires / Cut Copy-type tropical vibe.
Compare these two tracks plus a demo called ‘BRKLYN FIG 1’ on their Facebook or MySpace and judge for yourself whether you think they’re the next big thing. Considering summer and music festivals are just around the corner, they just might be.
