I had the pleasure seeing 4AD signing Anni Rossi twice in 2009: once, opening for Noah and the Whale in May, and then the next month with Camera Obscura. What really impressed me was how much presence she had onstage with only her voice and viola.
This time around on her new album ‘Heavy Meadow’, Rossi’s brought in – gasp! – electronics. Enter an entirely different sound – and her cover of ‘Are You That Somebody?’ by Aaliyah. While there’s no way to trump the late, great r&b singer, this version pays respect to the original by keeping the sexy vibe going while allowing Rossi to spread her wings.
