Single Review: Calvin Harris feat. Kelis – Bounce

If the rumours are to be believed, Calvin Harris‘s third album will be released later this year. (No title has been named so far.) Before the new long player drops, Harris is releasing the single ‘Bounce’, featuring Kelis. In my opinion, it’s not really ‘featuring’, it’s more like “Kelis feat. Calvin Harris” because the American r&b star contributing most of the vocals.
The press sheet for this single describes it as having a “cheeky, teasing beat”. Let’s be clear on this. The song has Nintendo-era bleeps and blips. Are these really necessary in 2011? I don’t think so. Then again, the overall feel of this song shows Harris’s common sense in modifying his sound to appear less like his previous electrohouse guise. (Expecting this single to sound like ‘Ready for the Weekend’? Forget about it.) I don’t know about you, but this doesn’t sound cheeky, it sounds cheesy. And annoying. Massive difference. However, given Harris’s stature on the UK music scene not only as an artist in his own right but as a producer, you can expect this song to soundtrack the summer.
