Single Review: Erin K and Tash – Coins

Currently based in London, Texas/Dutch duo Erin K and Tash (featured as a Bands to Watch in March 2010) will self-release their debut single ‘Coins’ on the 21st of November. This first single delicately picks through the sad ruination of personal connections, tracing a young girl’s search for love in all the wrong places back to her father, who was likewise tainted by the pursuit of success and control. With clear harmonies and a cadence reminiscent of late ‘80s folk-pop, especially Suzanne Vega, ‘Coins’ offers an oblique commentary on today’s society, much the way Vega’s ‘Luka’ did 2 decades ago. Masking the darker lyrics, the vocals drift through the airy guitar. These are some of my favorite kinds of songs: real substance inside a puffed pink shell.
The B-side ‘Sexy Cupcake Ditty’ shows a lively wit and a considerable skill in songwriting. Sometimes silly is harder to writing than sincere. The double entendre brought to mind American comedic/singing act Garfunkel & Oates. Although the latter is more single entendre!
Erin Kleh and Tash ter Braak have written, play and sing ‘Coins’ with a kind of lilt and wisdom not heard in a while from female vocalists. Although still unsigned, if they get the proper backing they will be able to take their smart girl sound far. I hope for more from these talented women.
