10 for 2012: #3 – Starlings

In the last couple weeks, we asked you to vote for the top 10 artists you thought would be big in 2012. Coming in at #3 on the list, we come to a band from the North that has a similar sensibility to a band that won our poll 2 years ago…

Hailing from Sheffield these days often means one of two things. One, you’re an Arctic Monkeys’ brand of indie rock or two, you’re bringing Sheffield’s electronic name back to it. Whilst Starlings are probably a bit indie, the latter is definitely the truer statement. The group’s geographical influence is obvious at first listen as they harness both the energies of East London’s finest hipsters, and make it raw and interesting again.

You voted them into the top half of our #10 for 2012 list, so what is it that’s going to prove you right? Well, with independent label Civil Music behind them, they’re three singles into a campaign that will almost certainly come to a climax in the form of one of the most exciting records of the year. Given the refreshing nature of the likes of the Gary Numan meets Little Boots ‘Dark Arts’, as long as they’re noticed, it should be a simple rise to the heights that Delphic achieved back in 2010, around the same time Starlings had first appeared on TGTF as one of the Bands to Watch. Check out their video for ‘Sirens’ below.
