Album Review: The Coronas – Closer to You

Son of Irish icon Mary Black, Danny O’Reilly’s band the Coronas released their third album in November to a #3 spot on the Irish charts. This album, ‘Closer to You’, again shows the quartet’s strength in writing both great lyrics and catchy riffs. Recorded in LA’s Sound Factory, a studio known for producing Tom Waits and James Taylor, the album is full of unabashedly bright pop music.

The opener, ‘What You Think You Know’ is a corker with jangling guitars and great rhythm. ‘Blind Will Lead the Blind’ is a simple layering of O’Reilly’s distinctive Irish voice over a driving beat and is a lovely testament to trust. I particularly like the bit of organ popping through the title track ‘Closer to You’. The lead single, ‘Addicted to Progress’, is one nearly everyone who went to their shows last year will recognise. On both their website and at their live shows, they asked fans to submit title suggestions for what they were referring to as “the rainbow song.” I must admit, I submitted a title to them. (They didn’t pick it…) With O’Reilly at the keys, it’s a choice pick for a single as it sounds ready-made for radio with a tiny touch of Two Door Cinema Club-like guitars. And still the rainbow reference.

I am not sure there is a single standout like the previous album’s ‘Someone Else’s Hands’, but the yearning ‘Different Ending’ begs a lover for “a scene from our past, this time a different ending”. O’Reilly is fantastic at conveying the almost love that this track is pleading for. ‘Make It Happen’ closes the album with some much needed weight, balancing both ends of the album: “you’ve got to grab your chances with both hands until you’re held against your will / you’ve got to make it happen for yourself.” The band is making happen for themselves with hard playing and hard touring. While still grasping for widespread success outside their homeland, they have solidified their popularity in Ireland: they have just completed an unprecedented six-night run at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre; watch a photo montage of these shows in the video below.

‘Closer To You’ is available now on 3u records through HMV and iTunes.
