(Jubilee Guilty Pleasure!) Video of the Moment #820: One Direction

Editor’s note: do not adjust your screen. Yes, we’re airing some of our (and some of your!) favourite song guilty pleasures in video form this Jubilee weekend. The bands were featuring are largely not the kind we write about here on TGTF, but we wanted to do something new and cool over this 4-day weekend. Come along for the crazy ride and enjoy.

I decided to take a chance on listening to this One Direction song, ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, because one of my Northwest Twitter friends adores them. (She’s the only reason I know one of them is called Harry Styles. That’s the extent of my knowledge of this band, sorry.) Yes, it’s a boyband. Yes, it’s five guys that were thrown together by The X Factor svengali Simon Cowell. Yes, they happen to be all very attractive to the teen set.

Forget that all for the moment and have a look at the first verse and the chorus (under the video embed). They’re cheesy, true, but with the simple words they manage something that most songs can’t. You know how there are so many songs where a man is saying how ‘fine’ a woman’s body parts are and how he wants to ‘git wit’ her? This is so refreshing because this song is saying “I like you the way you are”. They won’t win any songwriting awards, but gosh darn it, they’ve won thousands of points in my book by helping countless young girls with their self-esteem. With one song. It’s innocent and there’s nothing objectionable in this song either. If I was a parent, I wouldn’t mind one bit if my daughter was listening to this instead of Example.

It’s also as catchy as hell, and this summer you can bet I will be seen with the windows rolled down, pumping my fists to it. (The other pop song from a British boyband that has made it over to the American airwaves, the Wanted’s ‘Glad You Came’, is borderline sleazy. Why are you so glad she came? “Turn the lights out now” – please. You do know that preteen girls are listening to you, right?)

First verse
You’re insecure
Don’t know what for
You’re turning heads when you walk through the door
Don’t need make up
To cover up
Being the way that you are is enough

Baby you light up my world like nobody else
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed
But when you smile at the ground it aint hard to tell
You don’t know (oh oh)
You don’t know you’re beautiful!
If only you saw what I can see
You’ll understand why I want you so desperately
Right now I’m looking at you and I can’t believe
You don’t know (oh oh)
You don’t know you’re beautiful!
(Oh oh)
You don’t know you’re beautiful!
(Oh oh)
