Bands to Watch #259: Shields

Shields hail from Newcastle. Now what images does that conjure up? Bad weather, a big wooden angel, and of course, Alan Shearer.

Shields are probably as far from grim (and Alan Shearer) as you could get. With glittering synths and a bubbly energy, this band is a breath of fresh air amongst the torrid wave of misery infecting our country under the Coalition. Their breakthrough track ‘Mezzanine’ (video at the bottom of this post) has all the elements of a synth pop hit. The bass is full of vigour and bounce and has the feel of a late ‘80s disco combined with the infectious enthusiasm of The Go Team!

Don’t look at them as one trick ponies, though; they’re far more than the glossy synth driven act they may at first appear to be. They’ve got a bit of funk thrown in there on track ‘All I Know’, with changes of pace thrown in left, right and centre. The guitars are rattling, and they just add to their likeability factor, while the range of instruments they utilise just adds to the funky carnival like feel the music creates, kind of like a Geordie Rio carnival, just not as cold as you’re imagining.

The jutting guitar on ‘White Knuckles Tight Grip’ has a kind of Everything Everything feel. While the record’s production is almost flawless, it’s impressive to note that the band recorded and produced the record in their own studios. Their cover of SBTRKT’s ‘Pharaoh’ is definitely worth a listen, even if it is just for the fact that they’ve gone in a great new direction of the track, whoosh, will have SBTRKT fans scratching their heads.

I can’t see these guys going stratospheric yet, but if you’re up for a good bounce and some seriously fun music, then check out Shields. They’re a band who will do their best to convince you there are better things to Newcastle than Alan Shearer.
