Video of the Moment #1024: Dog is Dead

Singer Rob of Dog is Dead describes their new single ‘Teenage Daughter’ (off their new album ‘All Our Favourite Stories’) like this:

‘Teenage Daughter’ is a song I wrote about a conversation I had at the end of a party. I was talking to a girl who thought she may be pregnant just after she’d split from her boyfriend to go travelling around the world. It’s how I imagined life would be the next time I saw her if she had the baby. It’s about biting your lip and taking life head-on.

However, I have a completely different take on the video. As a Oriental girl myself, it resonated with me and with some sadness. The only joy this Korean girl seems to have is when she’s in her own little world that’s created by the music on her headphones; even her boss views her with a look of disdain, possibly thinking “what a waste”. At the end of the day, she finds solace in a giant ‘man’ she’s made out of golf balls. She’s missing things in her life that others take for granted. When you are a woman daring to defy your parents and the standard rules of convention – such as working in the men’s world of golf – you’ve traded one freedom for another. Or have we as a society defined the word ‘freedom’ too strictly? Watch the video below.
