English indie folk band Stornoway put on a mystic performance at the HMV Forum last week, performing songs off their new album ‘Tales from Terra Firma’ (Carrie’s review of it here), as well as a selection of songs off their 2010 album ‘Beachcomber’s Windowsill’. Having discarded their underlying attempt of punky riffs which peppered their old album, they have perfected their light-hearted folk sound producing a more successful album and individual sound.

Managing to sell out the arena, they had no trouble hypnotising the crowd, who kept all eyes intently focused on the quartet. They brought stillness and a deathly silence to the arena when lead singer Brian Briggs impulsively performed three unplugged songs, creating a personal connection with the crowd and bringing a rawness to the show. This feeling continued by the makeshift use of instrument: scraping two saws together added a rustic feel to the acoustic performance.

I wouldn’t have minded if the whole set had been performed in this way, as it had a way of transporting the crowd to a distant, small town environment, giving them a distinctiveness that set them aside from other performances of the same suit. This atmosphere was heightened by the mythic stage set, which consisted of a large glowing moon, complemented their fragile performance and illustrated the ‘…Tales’ contemplated throughout their new album.

Songs such as ‘Take Me as I Am’ and ‘The Great Procrastinator’ had the crowd bouncing and singing along, as did their most familiar song ‘Zorbing’, which closed the show on with a high, before the band reappeared with an encore of three more songs. I feel they delivered a satisfying and cheerful performance, which for me is sufficient only for background music and creating a quiescent, buoyant atmosphere. But as a whole feel that both their lyrics and their soft riffs lack some substance.
