Trying to put down into words what Manchester and its continuing lively music and arts scene owes to the late, great Tony Wilson is impossible. Though his legend has been shaped in the public’s minds in a significant way in recent times following the release of the irreverent 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, those of us who have looked to all the influential bands of the ’70s and ’80s from the city in the North and indeed, the people of Manchester themselves, will always remember him as the Factory Records and the Hacienda’s boss, tirelessly championing Manchester’s culture.

As a tribute to him, Mancunian poet and lifelong Wilson fan Mike Garry joined forces with music composer Joe Duddell for the atmospheric ‘St. Anthony: An Ode to Anthony H. Wilson’, being released Friday the 14th of August as a single to benefit The Christie Charitable Fund. Regardless of where on the political spectrum you fall on, we can all agree Tony Wilson’s death was a tragedy. The monies collected from the sales of this single will go towards cancer treatment in the same hospital where Wilson passed away of renal cancer in 2007. (You can also donate directly to the Christie Charitable Fund and learn more about the charity here.) There will also be a launch party for the single Friday night at the old Granada Studios, and you can buy tickets for it here. For a fuller experience of the single, visit this Retro Fuzz-designed interactive Web site where you can learn more about the places, people and stories mentioned in Garry’s lyrics.

Bless you, Tony Wilson. You are missed.
