Video of the Moment #2050: School of Seven Bells

When I first learned of School of Seven Bells early on in my blogging career, they were a trio comprised of identical twins Alejandra (vocals and guitar) and Claudia Deheza (keyboards and vocals) and Benjamin Curtis (guitars, synthesisers, and vocals). Claudia left in 2010, leaving her sister and Curtis to continue on with the name. Sadly, in 2013, Curtis died after a nearly year-long battle with lymphoma.
‘SVIIB’, the last true School of Seven Bells album ever to be released, was unveiled last month, over 2 years since Curtis’ untimely passing at the age of 35. While their legend is now steeped in sadness, the positive pop sensibility of the Bells’ music is evident in ‘Ablaze’, the muscular, brash track from the new album that now has its own promo. “How could I forget it?” Alejandra asks, though I think that’s more of a rhetorical question than anything else, because she will never forget Curtis, and nor will we. Another lyric from the song goes, “the day we met there was a new fire”: I can’t imagine a better song to honour Curtis’ memory and all the wonderful music the three musicians made together when he was still with us. Watch and listen to ‘Ablaze’ below.
