Video of the Moment #2292: Ed Harcourt

Ed Harcourt decided for his newest video, he was going to do something different and apropos for what’s going on around us. People around the world are fleeing war and persecution, but unless you see for yourself what it’s like on the ground, you really have no idea what their lives are like, do you? For ‘You Give Me More Than Love’, he collaborated with award-winning conflict journalist Christian Stephen for a documentary style music video filmed on the frontline in northern Iraq. Stephen has some powerful words for the news-slash-art they’ve created, and rather than diminish in any way, I’d rather you read the entirety below:

“Media exposure is vast concerning the tidal wave of those seeking escape and refuge from the Islamic State. An entire kaleidoscope of words and pictures (like these you’re reading now) reduced to a desperate and blood curdling effort to exhaust every adjective in order to properly articulate the human spirit that is outrunning pure evil.

Hours and hours of adrenaline pummelled footage showing refugee camps, tears, screaming, gunfire, explosions, loss of hope, and a pain throughout the soul that sometimes cannot be communicated verbally.

Upon returning from one of many trips to Northern Iraq to report on the crisis within, I was fortunate enough to take courage and personal refuge in what was yet an undiscovered internal country, for myself at least.

That solace was the work of my dear friend, collaborator, brother, and herculean musical talent – Ed Harcourt.

We soon found that as I was releasing my frontline reports and He [was] releasing his 7th studio album “Furnaces” that we had separately approached a similar, merciless near-limit of what could be communicated about our brutally dark, yet staggeringly beautiful world.

This video is a labour of love for us both, and an attempt to communicate the incommunicable. To defy the clinical packaging of a news report, and do our utmost to conjure a more emotive view of the conflict from an atmosphere all too easily relegated to the darkness.”
