Video of the Moment #2350: Shame

Brixton’s Shame are just one of several punk groups in England at the moment who took the trip across the pond last month to showcase at SXSW 2017. You can try to replicate the experience of seeing the group live in their latest video for their single ‘Tasteless’, out now on 7″ on Fnord. A dapper man in a hat walking through various corridors to a hidden away room, only to watch this band perform via projected image. There’s silliness involving ice cubes and what looks like the kind of condensed milk you use to make a flan, but then there’s a fire and well…I don’t get it quite yet, but you can give it a whirl below. To make further sense of it (maybe?), frontman Charlie Steen offers his explanation of what’s going on in this video he helped direct:

There always seems to be comfort in the collapsed, the constant pursuit for oblivion. What we portray is the detachment from what we have created ourselves, the willingness to destroy and demean it through stabbing, spray painting and eventually burning. All for one man’s slight amusement. It is a comment on removing oneself from thought and reasoning and accepting how nothing is truly permanent, nothing is completely original and only by understanding this can progression be made. The only boundary being reality itself, something many tend to avoid.

Shame have a pretty extensive list of UK shows from now until the middle of May, which are all listed in a cover photo on their Facebook along with a whole slew of summer festival appearances. While the only article at the moment in our archive that mentions them is the preview we wrote up for all the rock bands from London set to perform in Austin, something tells me we’ll be writing more about Shame in the coming weeks and months. Just a hunch…
