Video of the Moment #2361: Tom Chaplin

By on Monday, 15th May 2017 at 6:00 pm

Tom Chaplin is currently in the midst of a UK tour this month. The tour stops at Edinburgh Queens Hall tonight; it culminates with two sold out shows at Bexhill De La Warr Pavilion on the 24th and 25th of May. Bexhill, of course, is home to the ‘Sovereign Light Cafe’. Tickets are still available for his shows in Liverpool (16 May), Cambridge (21 May) and Birmingham (23 May). He’s also been announced as the support act for Jeff Lynne’s ELO in June.

The ex-Keane frontman, who has struggled with substance abuse for many years, shared a special article called ‘Stopping the Rot’ for Mental Health Awareness Week, which you can read here. Released last October, ‘The Wave’, his debut solo album, is a testament to Chaplin’s long road back from addiction. Today for you, we’ve got the video for ‘See It So Clear’ from the album. The way I understand it, it’s Tom’s impression of the clarity achieved after he started talking about his feelings openly and honestly through therapy.

Director Daniel Broadley explains the idea of the promo: “The dreamlike melody evoked such a strong sense of nostalgia, a theme I wanted to explore further in a visual sense. I loved the idea of creating a window into Tom’s past and displaying a mixture of archive footage of Tom as a child, innocent and untainted by the hardships of life to come; showing the uncertainties of adolescence; alongside live footage to represent where he is now in his life, positive and reformed.” Watch the video below.
