Video of the Moment #2363: Nadine Shah

It’s only 3 weeks until the UK general election, so it seemed appropriate to roll out Nadine Shah‘s newest promo video that distills fear and mistrust and the terrible things those very two things make people do. It’s a warning of what’s more likely to happen and on a more frequent basis if xenophobia is validated through the results of the election. ‘Out the Way’ was edited, directed and produced by Hand Held Cine Club and purposely made to look sinister and disorientating.
Shah, a second-generation immigrant from the North East, says of the visual: “The video is a response to this current global rise in nationalism, this awful rhetoric of ‘us and them’. I wanted the image to shock the viewer to highlight the brutality we are seeing happen. This is why we use the Salem witch trials as a reference in the video, to me that’s how it feels but with certain pockets of faiths being targeted.” The song itself has a hypnotising rhythm that easily pulls you in and leaves you playing the earworm again and again in your head. Check out the new video below. ‘Out the Way’ is the first single from Shah’s third album ‘Holiday Destination’, which will be released on the 25th of August on 1965 Records.
