Video of the Moment #2897: LCD Soundsystem

Brooklyn electro-rock band LCD Soundsystem came back from the dead, so to speak, following their 2011 breakup, with their fourth studio album ‘American Dream’, released in September 2017. (You can read editor Mary’s Live Gig Video preview of that album back through here.) Now, a year on from the Grammy-nominated LP’s release, James Murphy and company have shared a new promo video for album opener ‘oh baby’, which features a similar and striking theme of potential resurrection.
Directed by American filmmaker Rian Johnson and starring actors Sissy Spacek and David Strathairn, the video for ‘oh baby’ is equal parts science fiction and existential romance. Its dramatic course of action follows the musical evolution of the song through a slow and intriguing rising action to a climactic peak and a determined final scene of resolution, which is left open to the viewer’s interpretation. Without giving away the twist, I’ll simply say that both the music and the visual treatment are riveting from beginning to end, and the character acting over the short course of the promo video is exquisite.
