Video of the Moment #2249: Amber Run

By on Monday, 19th December 2016 at 6:00 pm

Nottingham four-piece Amber Run have announced details of their sophomore album. ‘For A Moment, I Was Lost’, a new 12-track collection from the Midlands group, will be released on the 10th of February 2017 on Easy Life Records. To be included on the new long player will be previously unveiled singles ‘Haze’ and ‘Stranger’.

Tonight, we have for you another exciting cut from the upcoming effort. ‘No Answers’ goes through phases, beginning gently before turning anthemic and then ultimately loud and rip-roaringly unapologetic. Watch the live performance video of the song below. For much more on Amber Run as covered here on TGTF, go here.

Video of the Moment #2058: Amber Run

By on Friday, 8th April 2016 at 6:00 pm

I’ve only just learned that Nottingham’s Amber Run have lost a bandmate, so I haven’t even gotten a chance to find a new photo of them to replace the one we’ve got here on file. In a post yesterday, they announced their compadre Felix had decided to leave, though thankfully it was a clean, amicable break and everyone’s still friends. (Phew.)

On better, happier news, they have also revealed that they are currently in the midst of recording their second album. With that, they’ve shared an early teaser in the form of ‘Haze’, and this smoky, monochromatic promo video to go along with it. ‘Hyaena Records’ is listed on the YouTube entry, which makes me wonder if they’ve decided to also start their own label or imprint. We’ll just have to hang in there and see what new news on Amber Run surfaces in the next few months. In the meantime, enjoy ‘Haze’ below. For all our past coverage on the band, head here.

Album Review: Amber Run – 5AM

By on Tuesday, 21st April 2015 at 12:00 pm

Amber Run 5AM coverIn recent years, Nottingham has produced some of the music industry’s best new talent, from London Grammar and Dog is Dead to Saint Raymond and Jake Bugg. Amber Run, a five-piece indie pop group who met at the University of Nottingham, is the latest band to emerge from the city, and their debut album ‘5AM’ is something to behold.

The record, which was produced by Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Two Door Cinema Club, Foals), is an excellent showcase of Amber Run’s ability to produce anthems. Album opener ‘I Found’ is a pulsating track, which combines dark, powerful lyrics with bellowing, stripped-back harmonies, whilst ‘Spark’ blends the indie folk vibes of Mumford and Sons with a Coldplay-esque piano and vocal arrangement, as the underlying guitar and drum beat explodes into action during the thunderous chorus.

Each track on the album is laden with hooks; the whirling guitar intro of ‘Hurricane’ leads into a clap-along anthem, which is begging to be chanted at a major music festival. Not to mention the euphoric sounds of ‘Noah’ and ‘Pilot’ and the funky tones of ‘Good Morning’, which bears undertones to The 1975’s ‘Chocolate’. ‘Shiver’ and title track ‘5AM’ provide a slower pace to the proceedings, brilliantly flaunting the natural rawness of Joe Keough’s vocals. The record also includes fan favourite ‘See You Soon’, an ode to the band’s hometown of Nottingham, and ‘Just My Soul Responding’, the brilliant first single to be taken from the album. There’s a real cohesion, as each of the tracks almost seamlessly flows from one to the next, with the use of two short interludes (‘M.F.’ and ‘C.F.’) nicely holding the album together.

Overall, ‘5AM’ is a brilliant exhibition of Amber Run’s soaring ambition, as the record is brimming with tracks that could echo around arenas. Considering the band’s relatively short time on the music scene, they already have a very mature sound, which is only going to develop as the group go on to bigger and better things. With the right exposure, this is not just a possibility, more an inevitability.

Looking ahead to their next record, it’ll be interesting to see whether Amber Run opt to follow in the footsteps of Coldplay and produce a dance pop album or continue to output indie pop. Whichever route they take, their follow-up will certainly be highly anticipated, that’s for certain.

Amber Run’s debut album ‘5AM’ is out now on RCA Victor. The group have just embarked on a new UK/Irish tour.

Nottingham’s Amber Run let things on a cliffhanger on their last promo video for single ‘Just My Soul Responding’. This promo of ‘Noah’ picks things up where they left off, clarifying why the girl took all the fighter’s money. I kind of had a feeling the way it was going to end but nevertheless, it’s a satisfying turn of events for the downtrodden to have a happy ending. Watch it below. ‘Noah’ will be released as a single on the 19th of April.

Our past coverage of Amber Run on TGTF is this way. The band’s debut album ‘5am’ will see its release the 27th of April on RCA Victor.
