Interview: Loyal Trooper

Loyal Trooper - One Day All This Will Work Out EP coverA couple of months ago we introduced you to Loyal Trooper, one of our favourite new artists for a while. Since we introduced him he’s had coverage and airplay on the likes of Steve Lamacq and XFM, so he’s certainly no flash in the pan.

The singer/songwriter better known to friends and family as Andy Walker took some time out of his busy recording schedule to offer us some free MP3s along with sitting down for a bit of a chat.

MP3: Nottingham Wasn’t Built For Me
MP3: The Doctor
MP3: Holloway To Beeston Express

For those not familiar with your music, how would you describe your sound?

I’m useless at this question. I try to convey my point of view in my songs, attempting to communicate with people in a frank and honest way. Bill Hicks once said that he talked to his audience in the same way he’d talk to his friends. If people didn’t like what he was saying and walked out, booed or didn’t want to listen then that was their way of saying they didn’t want to be his friend. I look at my songs in the same way.

After the jump: read more of our chat with Andy.

EP Review: Loyal Trooper / One Day All This Will Work Out

By on Tuesday, 21st October 2008 at 9:28 pm

Like your Belle and Sebastian or Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly? Slightly folky, slightly cheeky, but essentially true songs about real people? Then perhaps Loyal Trooper will be your sort of thing.

Loyal Trooper, better known to family and friends as Andy Walker, releases his “One Day All This Will Work Out…” EP on Monday 3rd November, a collection of six guitar anthems for the jilted generation recorded earlier this year.

Recorded with help from his friends to record all the different instruments and recorded in part in the local Baptist Church in Kettering, it’s certainly not going to win awards for blockbuster production techniques, but what it lacks in sheen it more than makes up for in passion. Loyal Trooper manages to sound sincere, without preaching like some acoustic singer / songwriters end up doing.

With Belle and Sebastian’s artful storytelling (M1 to the A52) and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly’s social conscience (Five Year Plan), there’s something for everyone who likes their music a little different, a little more thoughtful and colourful than the same old same old David Gray album.

Like what you’re hearing on his myspace page? Well, maybe you want to go out and warm up a cold autumnal evening by catching him at one of the below dates:
