(SXSW 2016 flavoured!) Live Gig Video: Blaenavon perform ‘Dragon’ at Manchester Albert Hall for Burberry Acoustic

By on Monday, 1st February 2016 at 4:00 pm

Blaenavon are a trio that hail from Liphook, East Hampshire. To be perfectly frank, I don’t know a whole lot about them. I *do* know that the indie group are one of 14 acts to have received PRS funding for their maiden voyage out to Austin next month for SXSW 2016, which is a great vote of confidence in both their musical talent and potential. The masses have also spoken: a gig this coming Thursday, the 4th of February, at London Lexington is already sold out.

On the aesthetic side of things, Blaenavon have received attention from posh fashion house Burberry: their lead singer Ben Gregory has been chosen as the face for Burberry’s spring/summer 2016 campaign. With that, the band were recently filmed by the company performing at a Christmas show at Manchester Albert Hall last month. In the below video, they’re seen performing ‘Dragon’ from their recent ‘Miss World’ EP. Have and watch and listen and let us know what you think of this up-and-coming English group.

Live Gig Video: Hidden Charms perform ‘Dreaming of Another Girl’ for Burberry Acoustic

By on Tuesday, 21st July 2015 at 4:00 pm

In Burberry’s ongoing series of acoustic sessions starring the well-dressed and well-heeled UK bands that turn their heads, young London four-piece Hidden Charms take their turn performing for an exclusive video. Like in their previous track ‘Sunnyside’ that we featured as a MP3 of the Day last summer, this performance of ‘Dreaming of Another Girl’ shows its bluesy, effortless cool (check out those shades!), even within the limitations of an acoustic performance. Watch the live performance below.

Here is a stripped back, and a couple members-less, acoustic version of ‘Teenage Blood’, performed by the great Tom Williams and the Boat, for a Burberry acoustic session. Watch it below. ‘Teenage Blood’ is the title track of their latest album, released in March.

Video of the Moment #361: The Acoma

Yes, ANOTHER video from the Burberry Acoustic sessions. But what can I say, they pick great bands and the videos they shoot are stunning! London band The Acoma are one of the latest to be featured, performing their charming song ‘Leaps & Bounds’ in their back garden. Formerly called Sunset’s Edge, they changed their name when they added two more members. Fun fact: lead singer Matthew Gilmour is the son of Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.

Single Review: Dog is Dead – Young

By on Monday, 20th September 2010 at 12:00 pm

Nottingham five-piece Dog is Dead are releasing their second single, ‘Young,’ today. It’s the follow-up to their debut single, ‘The Glockenspiel Song,’ which was released in June. They’ve described their sound as “an original blend of harmonious, indie-pop in the disco, with a cheeky jazz hint” and “uplifting pop for jazz junkies and choir folk,” and these are quite possibly the perfect descriptions.

‘Young’ is so indie it hurts, and I mean that in the best way possible: in it, Dog is Dead takes some of the defining characteristics of everyone’s favorite indie bands and combines them into something really joyous and special and all their own. It begins with electronic bleeps and chirps that wouldn’t be out of place in Passion Pit‘s arsenal. Its fast-paced rhythms are somewhere between the ‘mathletics’ of Foals and the Afrobeats of Vampire Weekend. And the chorus of “hold your breath and count to ten / we’re losing touch and losing friends / but we’re young” is lovely, with gorgeous, soaring harmonies reminiscent of Fleet Foxes or Mumford and Sons. This, if you weren’t sure, would be the bit that appeals to ‘choir folk.’ And the ‘jazz junkies’ (the Mighty Boosh fan in me is conjuring up images of Howard Moon) will love the saxophone. On top of it all, there’s a sing-along quality to the melody that would make it fantastic live.

‘Young’ is a spectacular song, and having already opened for bands like One Night Only and Ok Go, and played at Dot to Dot Festival and Glastonbury, they’re surely headed for great things. I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Check out the official video for ‘Young’ below, as well as a Burberry acoustic session below the cut.

Dog is Dead are playing a series of gigs in England this September and October. See our ticket alert for more information. TGTF is also lucky enough to be able to offer you two mp3s from the band:
