MP3 of the Day #437: Catherine AD

By on Thursday, 10th November 2011 at 10:00 am

Catherine AD released a mini-album last month called ‘Communion’, which you can purchase from iTunes here and Amazon here. The album was recorded with Catherine and an all-female string section at the legendary Church Studios in London’s Crouch End (aka the birthplace of the Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’). And Catherine is giving away the evocative piano-driven track ‘Going Wrong’ for free. Listen to and download it below.

Interview: Catherine AD

The kooky and spooky gothic folk chanteuse Catherine A.D. has slowly creeped into our consciousness over the past few months, and so when we were offered the chance of sitting down and asking a few questions we jumped at the chance…

Hello Catherine, what are you up to today?

Packing for my American adventure tour of the greatest pianos of the West Coast .

Seems you’ve been compared musically to all sorts of people from Tori Amos to Polly Harvey via Nick Cave and Jeff Buckley. How do you like to describe your music? Who would you say your influences are?

I think I would describe my music as ‘if Karen Carpenter had heard grunge…’

I’m influenced much more by songwriters/solo artists rather than ‘bands’ – Tom Waits, Rufus Wainwright, Bowie, andcomposers like Philip Glass, Michael Galasso – although as I’m self taught on most instruments it probably ends up sounding like a much more rudimentary version of the imagined orchestral arrangements that go round in my head…

You recently did an amazing cover of Hurts’ Better than Love – how did that come about? Are you a big Hurts fan?

The HURTS cover was just the product of a Saturday night spent in marking the official death of my social life… I really like the Arthur Baker remix of one of the Hurts tracks which is how I cam across the band through a friend.

So far, have you preferred recording the music or playing it live more?

I’m much more at home in the studio these days – I love the process of recording and getting lost in the mechanics of it. I’ll probably end up doing a Kate Bush and do one huge theatrical extravaganza (which is the kind of live show I’d like to do – choreography and all) and then never play a tour again!

Before you go on stage do you have any weird and wonderful rituals?

Vomiting. Vowing never to do it again… Not really – hah! Just tuning the guitar about seven times and applying serious amounts of glitter.

What would be a cool location you’d like to do a gig at?

I’d really like to play a tour of churches – I just love the built in awesome acoustics and the sense of ritual and occasion you just don’t really get in modern buildings.

What’s laying ahead for you for the rest of 2010?

I’m off to America for the summer and then there is a release that’s nearly ready for the autumn and I’m hoping to record another EP as soon as I get back in September – I think the album format if kind of becoming redundant these days – especially if you write a lot and with all the new ways of distributing and releasing music. I’m cultivating my impatience this year.

Finally, what TV, films and books are you really enjoying at the moment?

I’m just making my way through the Hitchcock box set which I’m really enjoying. I have a lot of catching up to do film-wise as we didn’t have access to many movies growing up – I saw Ferris Bueller for the very first time the other day. I’ve just finished Patti Smith’s book ‘Kids’ which was incredible and I’m about to start reading Christopher Isherwood’s diaries which I think is very appropriate for my imminent relocation….

MP3 of the Day #194: Catherine AD covers Hurts

By on Friday, 4th June 2010 at 10:00 am

To mark the release of her brand new EP ‘Skeleton Songs’ on 7th June, Catherine A.D. has recorded a beautiful cover of the Hurts’ track ‘Better Than Love’. The Hurts track is pretty impressively huge and symphonic, but Catherine manages to take it to another level. Much love for this track here at TGTF towers this morning as we recover from a rather large night out catching Delays last night.
